Among the Eastern European Piazzettas, Piazzetta Riga was the one that hosted the most broadcasts. The programme was strongly influenced by the fact that Latvia had declared its independence from the Soviet Union a year earlier and a return to its own national identity was taking place. There were programmes about the media scene and minorities in Latvia, travel tips for the country and performances and performances by Latvian artists and musicians. The economic difficulties the country was facing at the time were also addressed in some programmes. For technical reasons, most of the programmes could only be broadcast by videophone and with the slow-scan method, which could only transmit black and white still images. Only in one show moving images were transmitted via satellite link.
