“Piazza virtuale” fit the programming philosophy of 3Sat, which at the time advertised itself with the slogan “Anders fernsehen” (“Television differently”) and positioned itself as a public cultural programme. “We were there to try things out,” says Wolfgang Bergmann, responsible for the programme at the time, in our interview.

In the video recording of a teleconference between the station’s management and documenta curator Jan Hoet, which took place before the show went on air, both sides discuss their expectations of the programme.
