“Piazza virtuale” fit the programming philosophy of 3Sat, which at the time advertised itself with the slogan “Anders fernsehen” (“Television differently”) and positioned itself as a public cultural programme. “We were there to try things out,” says Wolfgang Bergmann, responsible for the programme at the time, in our interview.

In the video recording of a teleconference between the station’s management and documenta curator Jan Hoet, which took place before the show went on air, both sides discuss their expectations of the programme. In the conversation, we first see then-3Sat director Walter Konrad, then producer Wolfgang Bergmann. Jan Hoet can only be heard as an interviewee.
